DISASTER RECOVERY - VERSION 8.4
http://rbsdrive.com/rbstech/TS100269.HTM

Article Number: 100269
Software: RBACKUP CLIENT Version 8.4

This article is for use with RBackup version 8.4 only. More current versions have a different technique. Search the Knowledge Library for "Disaster Recovery"

Creating an Emergency Recovery Disk (recovery.dat) - How does a Disaster Recovery operation work?

This article applies to Version 8.4.81 and higher.

When you install a new client or change the login information, encryption key (or any configuration information that affects login) the software asks you to `create an updated emergency recovery diskette'. OR if it's a first time install of client it'll ask you to `Create Recovery Disk'

Say `yes' and it'll ask for `Insert recovery diskette', by default the software recommends using the floppy drive A:

If there is no A: drive (or a floppy drive) on the system, just say `OK'.

By default the emergency recovery file (recovery.dat) is stored in the folder C:\Program Files\Remote Backup\

(C:\Program Files\Remote Backup\recovery.dat)

Now you can copy or move the file to a different location. It's very IMPORTANT that you save this file for disaster recovery purposes.

Disaster Recovery Operation:

After installing the client software, select the `Disaster Recovery' option. On disaster recovery, the system needs that file (recover.dat) to work. If not present on a diskette, the software asks for an alternate path for that file.

Enter the complete pathname for the recovery.dat file.

Click OK and the Disaster Recovery operation starts.

From the recover.dat it gets all the information it needs.

Then it calls up the server and searches for the most recent backup.mdb file. It then downloads the latest backup.mdb file and decrypts it into an intermediate name. Then the client stops. When you rerun the client it detects the file "recovered.mdb" (that's the intermediate name.) It deletes the existing backup.mdb and renames the recovered.mdb to "backup.mdb"

SO, A simple Disaster Recovery would be done because the user would use his original disk to install client, then click Disaster Recovery, insert the disk AND the system downloads the latest catalog, ref. Names, etc and he's right where he left off.

If there are problems with the Disaster Recovery, the client logs in Detailed or Trace Mode give clues.

OVERRIDEDR.INI is an optional file that can override values in "recover.dat." The most useful are the server, port, client directory and a specific backup set id (001, 002, 01F etc) to target a specific database if necessary.

This is explained in more detail in the following article:

CAN I CHANGE THE RECOVERY DISK OPTIONS? http://remote-backup.com/rbstech/TS100170.HTM

The last option is the Manual Disaster Recovery wherein you can type in the information needed including the Encryption key.

And the WORST CASE scenario is an ESCROW based recovery. Contact RBS for details regarding the Escrow based recovery.
