Bandwidth Requirements Calculator

This calculator can help you determine how much bandwidth you will need
for your Remote Backup Service. Enter the number of customers you will
service, their average backup size, the average compression ratio for their
data types, and your peak Service Hours.

Number of Customers - Enter the number of active Clients you will service.

Average Backup Size - This is basically an educated guess. The "average"
business client using RBackup Remote Backup sends about 150 megabytes
(pre-compression) of native files per day.

Average Compression Ratio - RBackup compresses average business data
about 75%. Word processing, accounting, and some database files
compress as much as 90%. Pictures and music compress less than 5%.

Service Hours - If your customers will send you data 24 hours a day, enter
24 here. If most of them will send data between 5PM and 7AM, enter 14. This
number greatly effects your bandwidth requirements because the calculator
figures the bandwidth needed to complete all backups within this period.
For example, a 12 hour Service period will require twice the bandwidth of a
24 hour Service period if the periods are fully loaded.

The result is your Bandwidth Requirement for the DOWNLOAD speed of
your Server's Internet Connection, specified in megabits per second.
By using our exclusive Server Locator, many RBS Servers are operated on
inexpensive Cable Modems or DSL lines. These types of connections
can be bought inexpensively because their UPLOAD speed is slower than
their DOWNLOAD speed. What matters most to an RBS Server is its
DOWNLOAD speed.

Typical DOWNLOAD Speeds in Megabits per Second

Cable Modem 1.0, 2.0, 3.0
DSL 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0
T1 1.5
