Version 10.2.001
Release Date: 8 June 2010

This is a minor release.

Minor fix for Open Files Agent This is a very minor fix for a rare problem that sometimes causes a problem on installation on Windows 7 and Server 2008 when the Open Files Agent is installed.

Version 10.2.000
Release Date: 5 May 2010

This release includes new features, which are highlighted in bold.

Database level backup support for Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010 using Windows Volume Shadow Copy: This will enable Exchange transaction logs to be flushed automatically after the first full backup. The first backup will be a full backup and followed by differential backups.

VSS support for multiple volumes: This is needed if the Exchange logs and the database files are stored in different drives.

Exchange database and log files are checked for integrity before being transferred to the server.

Support for Active Directory 2008 using Windows Volume Shadow Copy.

Support for native SQL differential backups: This will make the backup size smaller after the first full backup, also make backups go much faster.

New registry keys added to force full backups for SQL and Exchange Plugin:

  • SQL:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Plugins\SQL Server
    KeyName: DiffMaxCount
    KeyType: REG_SZ
KeyValue: Number representing the "Number of differential" backups before forcing a full

    KeyName: DiffPerct
    KeyType: REG_SZ
KeyValue: Number representing the percentage size of the differential backups compared to the full that has to be reached or
exceeded to force a full backup.

  • Exchange:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Plugins\Exchange Server(VSS)
    KeyName: DiffMaxCount
    KeyType: REG_SZ
KeyValue: Number representing the "Number of differential" backups before forcing a full

    KeyName: DiffPerct
    KeyType: REG_SZ
KeyValue: Number representing the percentage size of the differential backups compared to the full that has to be reached or exceeded to force a full backup.

  • Local Mirror: The software will be able to maintain a full mirror of client’s data locally. This allows for immediate restores at local network speeds. Local Mirror option can be enabled only from the Advanced Interface. (Options Menu)

"MaxFileSizeLimit" You can now define individual file size limit for backup. Any file that gets selected for backup but exceeds this limit will be skipped from backup and throws a file exception.

Added More Advanced Options section in the Customize Client Installer utility to pre-customize MaxFileSizeLimit, Pause Mode and FreeSpace Threshold options.

    Fixes and Enhancements:

Minor fixes in Simple Interface module.

    Version 10.1.74
    Release Date: 25 February 2010

This release includes new features, which are highlighted in bold.

Client: Added UNC support for Exchange Plugin to support backing up Exchange 2007 mailboxes when the Temporary Path used is a network drive.

Client: Added extra checks added to verify the integrity of the complete file in the server. This can be controlled using the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Settings\

    VerifyFileinServer - REG_SZ - True

Email Notifications: Added option to send attachments in text format. An option is available to specify Max Size for the Attachment. Text Attachments:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\RBSServer\Enotify\

"TextAttachments" - REG_SZ - "True" (default is false or Zip attachments)
"AttachmentSize" - REG_SZ - "5" (AttachmentSize in MB. Default value is 5. Only applies to text attachments)

Email Notifications: Attachment Name now reflects the filename being attached. Files in the Zip file attachment now extract to the root.

Email Notifications: Quota based calculations in 10.1.73 release was defaulted to Native Size instead of Compressed Size or disk usage on server. Fixed this to default to compressed. Also, added a registry override if you want to use 'Native' file sizes for quota calculations.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\RBSServer\Enotify\

"Quota" - REG_SZ - "Native" (Creating the above key, changes the quota calculations to use Native file sizes for the notifications)

Email Notifications (fix): Corrected Error 94 - invalid used of null (introduced with 10.1.73 release)

Email Notifications (fix): Backup notifications now reports exceptions (in the Subject) raised due to Free space limitations and other exceptions raised by client, which results in a failed/incomplete backup session.

Customize client installer: Added new options to prompt the end-user to specify Temp Path and BitBackup Reference Path locations during installation. ('BackupSettings' tab). Text on the form can be customized.

Client: Added new option 'Close when backup finishes' to the backup progress window. Only applies to manual backup. When selected, the client closes automatically on completion.

Client: Added a message prompt to indicate that another instance of the application is already running if the client is already running a backup. (Applies only to advanced interface)

Server: Expanded capability for the server to map multiple network drives on start up. Contact Technical Support for detailed instructions.

Minor fix: Registration wizard would fail to launch if there was a running window named 'remote backup' (example, if you had the 'Remote Backup' folder open). Fixed this to check for running instance of rbclient.exe process instead.

Email Notifications: Added new 'Broadcast Email' message notification.

Registration Wizard Enhancement: Added capability to retry connection if failsafe servers are available. (That is, failsafe server address defined as "IPAddress1:Port1;IPAddress2:Port2")

Client Fix: Backup file sizes in the progress window displayed incorrect numbers for files that resumed file transfer (Append Mode). Fixed now.

    Version 10.1.73
    Release Date: 22 December 2009

This release includes new features, which are highlighted in bold.

Client Fix: Fixed Dll client registration issues with Windows 2008/Windows 7.

(Critical Update) Client: Additional checks added to verify the integrity and transfer of backup.mdb (catalog).

Client: Upgraded fileview and folderview controls so files and folders display faster.

Client Fix: Removed the start menu shortcut for "Helpdesk" that was introduced with 10.1.70 release.

Client Fix: Exchange Agent modifications for Public Folder access and backing up sub-nodes.

Server: 10.1.70 server upgrade sometimes failed to create new database fields properly (SQL Backend only). Fixed now.

Email Notifications: Disk Resource calculations now use the database buckets for calculations and does not require scanning entire data drives.

Email Notifications: Quota-busted notifications also use database buckets for calculations.

Email Notifications: Backup Data Size information in all notifications converted from "bytes" to show size in "KB/MB/GB" NOTE: Modify your email templates to remove the word "bytes."

    Email Notifications: The following special tags can now be additionally used in the email templates (all notification types) - #userfirstname#, #userlastname#, #usercompany#, #useraddress#, #usercity#, #userstate#, #userzip#, #usercountry#, #usertelephone#, #userfax#, #useremail#, #userquota#, #userversion#, #accountcompany#, #accountgroupname#, #accountaddress#, #accountcity#, #accountstate#, #accountzip#, #accountcountry#, #accounttelephone#, #accountfax#, #accountemail#, #accountquota#

Upgrade Notes: Server upgrades from version 10.1.70 or under, need to run the 'Disk Resources' report for All Users after upgrade. This is necessary for the new fields (buckets) in the database to get updated for existing users/data.

    Version 10.1.7
    Release Date: 10/8/2009

This release includes new features, which are highlighted in bold.

NEW FEATURE - Simple Interface: Added all agents (AD, SS, SQL, Exchange, SharePoint) as part of Simple Interface GUI.

    NEW FEATURE - Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit) Compatibility.

Simple Interface: Modified creation of new backup sets, to get default settings from rbackup.ini.

NEW FEATURE - Simple Interface: Added menu option to view logs.

NEW FEATURE - New HelpDesk Module: Introduced a new HelpDesk Remote Control tool built into the RBS Server. This new remote control tool allows easy access to remotely control your clients' systems. Built on open-sourceUltraVNC. (This feature is ONLY available with purchase. Contact Sales for moreinformation.)

NEW FEATURE - Added customization and branding for the HelpDesk portal, in the Customize Client Installer.

Server side/Disk Restore: Restore DLL - fixes for bitbackup.

NEW FEATURE - Added "SessionQuota" and "FileSelection" options to be set as defaults to new sets (rbackup.ini).

NEW FEATURE - Reporter: This version introduces the use of buckets (fields in database) to store the compressed and original data size (the total usage) for customers. The "User Quota Report" uses these buckets to generate reports and does not scan the data drives for its calculations any more, thus making the report generation very quick. (If doing an upgrade from earlier version, you have to manually run the 'Disk Resources' report once, to update these buckets in the database.)

Fix: Client did not send the logs.zip and sessioninfo file when Sync options were turned ON with Remote Management.

NEW FEATURE - Client's Version number and IP Address are now being recorded on the server. You can view the Version and Last IP Address in the Accounts section, and in User Details.

Registration Wizard Plugin Fix: Accepted only timeout values less than 1000. Corrected this to accept values within the range 60-6000. Also the "Generate Key" option generated keys that are non-readable characters. Corrected this to be consistent with the Client program.

NEW FEATURE - Added the ability to assign Quota via the Registration Wizard. This allows the ability to create custom installers with pre-assigned quota, thus avoiding the need to manually edit a user account post-registration.

NEW FEATURE - Client: First Backup with Incremental or Differential will now select all files (by default) for backup during the first run even with Archive Bit Selection. To override this behaviour set the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Settings: "DisableFirstFull" - REG_SZ - "True"

Note: There is no longer a need to run a first Full Backup, and then switch to Incremental/Differential.

NEW FEATURE - Added the capability of assigning Root Directory by Account Group.

NEW FEATURE - Added the capability of assigning default Quota by Account Group.

Fix: Final sessioninfo file was not being transmitted to server if Session Quota exceeded. Fixed this.

NEW FEATURE - Added a new Wildcard Folder Exclusions format to exclude a sub-file path structure. Example: ?documents\My Music?

Fix: The client failed to properly do file-by-file transfer verification for files greater than 4 GB. Corrected this.

Stand Alone Restore Agents: Restore of files where the compressed size was greater than 4 GB sometimes failed. Fixed this.

    Version 10.1.65 (MAJOR RELEASE)
    Release Date: 06/01/2009

This is a major release that includes new features. The License Server has been replaced, which REQUIRES this update if you re-install your RBS Server after June 1, 2009.

Read about new features in the NEW documentation for the RBS Server, the Simple Interface Client, and the Advanced Interface Client.

NEW FEATURE: Stand-Alone Restore Agents The Web Restore Agent allows users to restore files from a web site to any computer, without the Client software. The Disk Restore Agent allows users to restore files from the raw Server archives copied to disk and returned to the end user along with the Disk Restore Agent.

NEW FEATURE: New Documentation The documentation has been re-written. The Client documentation is now in two editable .CHM files, one for each Interface. Each is also available formatted for editing and printing as a .DOC file. The Server documentation is now available as a .PDF file for printing.

NEW FEATURE: Fast Pick Selection method. (Refer to the Client's Advanced Interface manual for more details.) This method is designed to speed up the Scanning process (or File Selection process), especially in cases where there are many thousands of files to scan, (greater than 50,000) and where Archive Bit Selection is not appropriate. Fast Pick relies on the last successful backup's Date/Time Stamp. For the first backup, Fast Pick will always do a full backup. For subsequent backups, files that have been added or changed since the last backup (selected by date/time) will be backed up.

NEW FEATURE: Backup Exclusions (Refer to the Server's manual for more details) This feature allows service providers to exclude files/folders based on Wildcards and Virtual Folder exclusions, and gives more control over backup selections. These exclusions are per backup set. Files that match Backup Exclusions will not appear anywhere in the Client's file selection screens, so they are not available to be backed up.

NEW FEATURE: Optional Sync at end of backup. Added a new registry key ("SkipSync") to skip the sync process at the end of a backup. Default is False (recommended). "True" skips the sync process.

NEW FEATURE: Client Installer now adds rbschedule.exe to the DEP listing.

NEW FEATURE: Redesigned Simple Interface Changed graphics, added Fast Pick and Backup Exclusions. Admin Options now available in Simple Interface mode. File Sets are now editable via the "prebackupset.ini" file.

NEW FEATURE: Simple Interface now the default The Simple Interface is now the default interface for the RBackup Client. You can, of course, change this. See the Simple Interface Documentation.

NEW FEATURE: Changed Default Data Ports The new default data ports for the live software are 29001 to 29100. The default command port is 2774. The new default data ports for the Evaluation version are 29001 to 29010, and the command port is 2774.

NEW FEATURE: The Server installer now configures Plug and Play Routers For both the Evaluation and the Live server, its installer now attempts to forward ports for command and data ports.

NEW FEATURE: New License Server Replaced the InstallShield license server with an RBS-hosted license server. This update is REQUIRED if you want to re-install your RBS Server after June 1. The new License Server supports the new Pay Per Client and Pay Per Feature pricing models.

NEW FEATURE: Test Server Added to Menu We have added a Test Server link to the Tools menu on the RBs Server. This uses the same RBS Server Testers previousaly (and still) available online.

FIX: Licenses Used Field in RBS Manager now updates correctly when new users are added.

FIX: Simple Interface - Fixed the "Next Schedule" information field to display correctly. Windows Task scheduled jobs were not being created properly, fixed now.

Fix: Post rbs script (for a specified backup set) did not run if scheduled via Windows Task Scheduler. Fixed now.

Fix: Client - Directory Junction Issue with Network shortcuts (Vista and 2008) is resolved.

  • Additional checks to build missing queries during restore.
  • Client Installer - fix to properly upgrade the Open Files Driver.
  • Client's Username is now recorded in the Backup logs. Also, added a 'Backup Complete' log with Date/Time in the backup log.
  • Server side Disk Restore: From Accounts, when you right click on a user and select Restore Files, the root directory would truncate at a blank space (if the root directory involved spaces). This is now corrected.
  • Disk Restore: Added additional checks for missing inbuilt queries. This is a fix for restoring clients that are on 9.x version.
  • Disk Restore: Creates Temp Folder if it is not available.
  • Disk Restore: Fixed for the error "Error in integrating catalog" during restore.

  • Version 10.1.0 (PUBLIC)
    Release Date: 10/30/2008

New Feature: Restore From Disk The new Restore From Disk feature is built into the RBS Manager. It allows client files to be easily restored at the RBS Server. Right-click a client account to see the new menu choice. Service Provider must know the client's encryption method and key, or have access to the client's Key File.

New Open Files Agent (OFA) updated to version 4.1.233.0 - This fixes a compatibility problem with Windows Server 2003 R2 and various network issues. It also solves a compatibility problem with Active Sync.

Server licensing update Solves an intermittent issue where the RBS Server would at times fail at start with "License count exceeded" error after a hard reboot.

    Version 10.0.8 (BETA)
    Release Date: 09/08/2008

Modified Date/Time The client uses an API to retrieve the modified date/time value from files during file selection/scanning. This release fixes a problem where the API failed intermittently when the pathname exceeded 100 or more characters.

Updated Compression DLL This solves an intermittent issue with compression of files that were opened for writing non-exclusively by other applications.

New Feature: Native File Size The User Quota and Disk Resources report in the RBS Manager now include Native File Size.

Changes made to Email Notifications Fixed an issue where Over Quota Email would sometimes fail when connecting to database.

Server LanPrefix Fixed a local network issue. When LanPrefix (registry key) was set to 192;10;172, and the Client was running within the same subnet as the Server, the Server sometimes failed to send proper responses back to client.

    Version 10.0.4-V.10.0.7 (BETA)
    Release Date: 07/16/2008

Backup Window Elapsed Time Fixed an issue where the Client software could improperly calculate elapsed time for the Backup Window.

Registration Errors on Exchange and Restore modules Updated the Client installer to fix intermittent registration issues in Exchange and Restore modules.

Restore Interface Timeout Changed the "resume" logic to correct a timeout problem with the Restore interface.

Updated the Client/Server Login Protocol Changes were made to the login encryption protocol (RBS Server) to make it more reliable.

(New Feature) Stop purging files when network drives are removed. This feature was added because some customers have unreliable or part-time connections to network drives that might or might not be present at backup time. We added this feature to allow greater control over how this affects the file retention protocol.

This feature is controlled by the Registry Key - PDDriveCheck. Default value is Zero.

0 - the client will delete files if it's not present. It will not check for the Drives.
1 - the client will only check for Remote Drives before deleting a file.
2 - the client will check for Remote and Removable Drives before deleting a file.
3 - the client will check for Remote, Removable and Local drives before deleting a file.

(New Feature) To inhibit automatically moving the Bit Backup Reference Path to C:\Temp if BitBackup Reference Path becomes unavailable The Registry key BitBackupPathFailure controls this feature. Default value is False.

True - If the Backup Type is BitBackup and the BitBackup Temp. path is not available during the backup, the backup will be stopped and logged in the local log file.

False - Default behavior (Changes the BitBackup Temp. path to C:\Temp\rbackup and continues the backup).

Missed Backup Updates Modifications were made to Enotify.exe (for Missed Backup Notifications) to make it more reliable.

    Version 10.0.4

New Restore Interface - Much simpler, far more intuitive.

Exchange Agent: a) Exchange 2007 is now supported. b) Enhancements done to detect a full exchange backup and run incrementals.

New Open Files Agent: Replaced the old Open Files Agent with a new one which is now compatible with all versions of Windows, from Windows 2000 to the latest. The new OFA includes support for Domain Controllers, Vista and 64-bit OS. Please note: The OFA can back up files only on the local computer. It will not allow the backup of open files across the network. Install a copy of RBackup on each computer that requires the OFA to handle open files.

Windows 2008 Server is now supported by both the RBackup Client and Server.

Enhancements were done for File Transfer Verification.

New Feature: Purge If Deleted - When this option is selected, any file that is deleted from the client system automatically gets purged from the server, as long as it qualifies for purge based on the Retention settings. Otherwise, it will keep this file on the server forever - because of the 'Keep Latest Version' option.

How it works:After every backup session, when the client runs its purge operations, a new check is made to see if the file exists locally. If the local file is not present, and it qualifies for purge, the client then deletes/purges it off the server.

This option is under the advanced admin options on the Schedule interface.

RBS Client now accounts automatically for Daylight Savings Time.

Universal time format is now being stored in the %session$info.ini file.

Updated interface with Windows Task Scheduler.

Fixed DLL Sharing violation issues when launching multiple scheduled task backups starting at the same time. (ERROR - "DLL Sharing Violation. This program cannot access a critical DLL because it is single-use and in use by another program.")

Vista fixes: a) Fixed looping of directory junctions during initial scan. b) looping display of directory junctions is fixed in the client interface.

When a backup encounters Warnings (WARN: File/folder cannot be accessed) - these are now reported both in the logs and also via Enotify Notifications. Warnings also include exceptions that are thrown by built-in agents (i.e Exchange, SQL, AD/SS)

Changed the Menu option name from 'Files' to 'BackupSet'

Delete backup set - changed text to better explain the actions available on the confirmation message box.

Fixed: Changing temp directory maked plugins backup run more than once.

Made the Purge process faster. Made changes to 'MaxSyncTransactions' to make this faster.

Added a Free Space Threshold - (Free storage monitor to check if free space gets to a certain point, then clean close the backup and note in log) - Done.

This is a new Registry Key called "FreeSpaceThreshold" under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Settings The value is in MB. Default if no key is present is set to 300 MB.

%session$info.ini records Exception as "Backup was Stopped due to DiskSpace limitations"When the threshold is reached, the above are written - the current batch is completely transfered (or the files already prepared in a batch), then the client syncs, transfers the catalog and exits cleanly.

Change the behavior of "BackupSet: New" Vs "BackupSet: SaveAs" option. When you select New to create a new backup job - it should now load the set WITHOUT any File Selections like a Blank Set. If you want to clone an existing set, use 'SaveAs' option.

During Disaster Recovery, if the temp path locations defined in the backup.mdb file are not present or cannot be accessed - the client would sometimes repeat the question "New Registration Or Disaster Recovery" Now, if the temp paths do not exist, the client creates and assigns its temp locations per the 'ClientDB' registry value. So, if ClientDB points to F:\Program Files\Remote Backup.. then, the paths for temp will be created as F:\Temp... with a warning in the sessionlog.

Added a new feature called 'Backup Window': By enabling the following registry key to True, the Attempt Window will now act as an actual backup window (only for scheduled backups). When the Elapsed time of the backup session exceeds the window, it stops the backup. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Settings: "SetWindow"

Re-enable the old estimator with a registry key. Set the following key to True. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\Remote Backup\Settings: "ShowEstimator"

Temp Path - After doing a DR, if the Temp path location retrieved by the recovered database could not be accessed, it would go back to New Registration. This has now been corrected to redirect the Temp to the local drive, if the path defined in the catalog is not accessible.

    RBackup Server

Added upgrades to support the SQL PlugIn for the Server (a separate product).

Added an adjustable buffer size for Restore. Increasing the buffer size will increase the speed of transfers during Restores.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quantum Tech, Inc.\RBSServer\Settings: "BufferSize" - REG_SZ - "32767" (Default is 32767. Acceptable range is the limit of Long data type i.e. 2147483647)

Added extra error checking to better recover from an accidental disconnect after transferring a file, to be able to resume in a higher percentage of cases.

    Upgrades to Email Notifications:

Corrects false-positives for missed notifications for Weekly Schedules.

Added a third tab for viewing the Enotify Log/Summary of Notifications.

Added a New User Notification, sent whan a new user signs up using the ARS or the Registratio Wizard.

Inhibited sending notifications for User Accounts that are suspended.

Added new Macros for the Subject line:

    %F - First Name
    %L - Last Name
    %U - Username
    %E - Email
    %A - Account Group
    %C - Company
    %T - Trial Account

You can modify the Subject line using the Enotify interface and include the above macros. The corresponding text/value of the macro will be replaced in the email subject.

Examples for usage: (For New User Notification)
    - Subject line: "Please read your Backup welcome mesage. FirstName: %F, LastName: %L"
    - Subject line: "Please read your Backup welcome mesage. Username: (%U), Account: (%A)"

    RBS Manager

Fixed incorrect display of backup file sizes with files greater than 2GB.

Corrected Disk Resources report for backups greater than 2.14 GB.

New 'search' feature under Tools on Manager to search for user accounts. Makes finding users much quicker for large user counts, 250 up to thousands.
